Pain with Intimacy? Oh My!

Experiencing pain during intercourse, often called dyspareunia, is more common than you might think, yet it's rarely talked about. If you're dealing with this, it can feel isolating and even overwhelming. You might wonder if something is wrong with you or feel hesitant to bring it up, even with a healthcare provider. But you’re not alone, and there is help available.

One of the lesser-acknowledged causes of pain during sex is pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that do some pretty important jobs—like supporting your bladder, uterus, and rectum. They also play a big role in sexual function. When these muscles are too tight, weak, or just not working together the way they should, it can lead to pain during intercourse.

This is where pelvic floor physiotherapy comes in. It’s a therapy that can make a huge difference. A pelvic floor physiotherapist is trained to assess these muscles and help you figure out what’s going on. They don’t just treat the symptoms—they work with you to address the root cause of your pain.

The therapy itself is tailored to your needs. It might involve exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor, hands-on techniques to release tension, and learning new ways to breathe and move that take the pressure off those muscles. Sometimes, assessment and treatment may consist of an internal component but I would like to emphasize that it is completely optional.

If you’re experiencing pain with intimacy, have been diagnosed with scary words like vaginismus, vulvodynia, vestibulodynia, or dyspareunia don’t suffer in silence. Pelvic floor physiotherapy could be a game-changer, helping you reclaim comfort and confidence in your intimate life. Reaching out for help is a brave first step—and it’s one that could lead to real relief.

With Love,

Your favourite physio, Liron
